Illegal Oxytocin in Dairy Farms.

 

A very prevalent problem which involves the use of oxytocin in dairies. basically, oxytocin is a hormone which is given for therapeutic purposes by registered veterinary practitioners in certain cases but we see that in Pakistan dairies across the country it is widely used for a non-therapeutic purpose.

 So, what is that purpose when cows and buffaloes have babies, nature provides for their udders to have milk so that infant gets nutrition. 

what the dairy owners do is that they remove the babies immediately from their mothers.

Either they get killed or sent for slaughter or starved to death and some of them are even given some grain and fed to be reintroduced into the dairy business later.

 

But without the baby the mother refuses to give milk refuses to let down the milk. Because she has the capacity to hold up the milk

Buffalo, is even more than cows they hold up the milk so in order to extract that milk forcibly, these people use spurious oxytocin and dirty syringes this hormone into the

mother cows or buffalos so that they face excruciating pain, and they let down that milk now.

 

Why do they feel that pain?

Oxytocin is basically a hormone that is naturally produced in the body of a female mammal when childbirth is happening, so jabbing oxytocin into them in the morning and evening during each milking time, basically means giving labor pains to these animals twice a day every day of their productive life this can be stopped. The non-therapeutic use of oxytocin is a cognizable offense under section 12 of the prevention of cruelty to animals act in fact it has the harshest penalties in the act uh one thousand rupee penalty and a two-year jail term.

This is how it's done?

Find a dairy in your neighborhood find out what the milking time is, check out whether they are using oxytocin or not,

likelihood is that they would be using oxytocin in the morning and in the evening, give a written complaint to the police accompany police officers into the dairy.

If you can find vials of oxytocin which would be unmarked bottles of clear liquid about 100 ml each do have the police seize those vials and syringes, A drug inspector will have to be called to the police station to seal the vials, put his stamp on it and send them to the forensic laboratory for establishment of the fact that the liquid is oxytocin.

You definitely have to ask the dairy owner if he has a prescription to buy such oxytocin and if he has a receipt of purchase from a licensed pharmacy. which he would not have if he is giving it in a non-therapeutic manner morning evening only for milk let down this simple report will have a big impact not only is the spurious oxytocin and non-therapeutic use of this hormone harming animals but is possibly damaging human health too.

you can report it and make a big difference to the lives of these animals. just imagine facing labor pains twice a day all day of their lives we can not only encourage dairy owners thereby to keep the babies with the mothers so that they let the milk down easily.
